Writing Techniques

1. In Academic and General Writing Test there are two writing tasks – Writing Task 1 and Writing Task 2.

2. Task 1 for Academic and General are different; however, task 2 is similar.

3. Read the question carefully

4. Underline the key words or phrases to understand the question

5. Write at least the minimum number of words mentioned in the question, i.e. 150 words for task 1 and 250 words for task 2.

6. Complete task 1 in 20 minutes and task 2 in 40 minutes.

7. General IELTS Writing Task 1

a. Set the context in the letter

b. Address all the bullet points

c. There are three kinds of letters – formal, semi-formal and informal of which any one can be asked in the exam.

d. Begin and end the letter appropriate to the kind of letter being written

e. Use the tone appropriate to the kind of letter being written

8. Academic IELTS Writing Task 1

a. Write an overview of the main information given in the chart/graph

b. Describe the information accurately

c. Identify the high points and low points of the data

d. Periods when the figures remain steady

e. Periods when the figures fluctuate

f. Compare and contrast data, if required

g. Use terms such as increase, decrease, steady, steadily, dropped, fell, improved

h. Write the answer in passive voice

9. General and Academic Writing Task 2

a. The following kinds of questions are asked in writing task i. Advantages and Disadvantages

ii. Discuss both point of views

iii. To what extent is this …

iv. Agree and Disagree

v. Problem and Solution

b. In opinion essays, the test taker must state her opinion right fro the beginning of the answer.
